June 17, 2001 - October 20, 2020
Marcellis Stinnette was born on June 17, 2001 in Jacksonville, Florida where he also grew up. He was goofy, talented and easy to get along with. Marcellis attended Terry Parker High School in Jacksonville and had moved to Chicago last year. He left behind his parents and five sisters. On October 20, 2020, 19-year-old Marcellis was shot and killed by a Waukegan police officer. He did not receive medical assistance and bled out on the ground for eight minutes. His girlfriend Tafara Williams was wounded and survived. They had a 7-month old baby. His funeral was held at Holy Tabernacle Church, where he used to attend when he was a little boy. Marcellis' mother asked mourners to wear blue and silver, his favorite colors. His mother received a message from him the night he died -- a rap song he was working on. Cortez Rice, a nephew of George Floyd, who died in police custody in May traveled from Minnesota to Jacksonville for the service. Rice said “I’m here standing in solidarity with the Stinnette family. When a brother or a sister gets killed out here on the streets, just remember that it’s one of our own. We all bleed the same color. White, brown, black, Asian, whatever. We’re all the same.”
